Ultrasound Scan Preparation:

You should wear appropriate loose clothing that can be easily moved out of the way for your scan. Depending upon the region being scanned you may be asked to remove some items of clothing or wear a medical gown so the region can be appropriately assessed. Please review the preparation advice below for each examination:

  • - Ultrasound Abdomen/Liver – You must be in a fasted state for your ultrasound scan. You should not eat for at least six hours prior to your scan. You may drink clear fluids, but they must not contain any fats such as milk or be fizzy. You should continue to take necessary medication with clear fluids.

  • - Ultrasound Urinary Tract/Pelvis (Females) – You will require a full urinary bladder for your ultrasound scan. It is advised to drink approximately 2 pints/1 litre of fluid two hours prior to scan. Please also try to refrain from emptying your bladder in the one hour preceding your scan.

  • - Ultrasound Lump/Hernia/Musculoskeletal Joints/Doppler Veins Upper or Lower Limb/Testes – You do not need to take any special preparations prior to these scans.

  • Ultrasound – after your scan::

The practitioner performing your scan will interpret the images and may be able to tell you the results immediately following the scan, however please note sometimes this is not possible to do if further assessment or discussion with another clinician is required.

You will receive an electronic written copy of your report following your scan detailing the ultrasound scan findings.
